Itinerary
Saturday (Buenos Aires- Mendoza)
In the afternoon we are going to leave Buenos Aires from the meeting points, load the bikes in the trailer and head towards Mendoza.
Sunday (Arrival to Mendoza)
After 16 hours we are going to arrive at Malargue. We have a couple of kms ahead of us until we get to Las Loicas, a small town where we are going to spend the night in the cabins, we will have typical young goat for supper to give us enough strength to carry on with our challenge.
Monday (Las Loicas – Pampita de Rojas)
Now the time has come to get on the MTB and put into practice what we have been imagining all these months.
We will climb up from 1800 to 2300 mts, bording the river. Some birds will accompany us as well as a heavy powerful wind that will touch us while we are riding.
After riding for 20 kms we will make our first stop to have lunch by the riverside in a stony beach and then we will rest for a while in order to be able to face the second part of the day.
After the nap, we will keep on climbing; we should concentrate ourselves and make a lot of effort in order to achieve our goal: Pampita de Rojas, 20 kms away, where we are going to spend the night in a tent. The moment we arrive, Rodado 26 will get in charge of preparing the camping as well as a delicious supper.
Tuesday (Pampita de Rojas – Valle del Campanario)
After having a breakfast full of calories, hydration and something warm to fight the cold, we will be dealing with the second day of cycling, and we are going to come across with different weather and vegetation. Campanario Hill will be close to us, with its snowed peaks (4480 mts). We will have 8 kms until we have the pleasure of beholding La Laguna de Maule, with its turquoise color and surrounded by high mountains.
From above we will be able to see the place where we are going to have lunch: a big rock that will work as a shelter to keep us away from the wind.
We have already been riding 54 kms and we are going to start to reap what we sow, the plains and the descents, and in the km 73 the most worshipped gift for any rider, LA CUESTA DE LOS CONDORES, a descent of 5 kms where we wont be touching the pedals and we can observe from above a mind-blowing landscape, the only sound is that of the wind in our faces, the rub of the wheels, and we will be smiling when Rio Maule turns into something magnificent. Once we get there, our town (camping) will have already been prepared and the only thing we will have to do is enjoy the view.
Wednesday (Valle del campanario – Lago Colbun)
The change in the landscape starts to show, there are a lot of green woods that will make this challenging day a little bit easier. This time we have 70 kilometers ahead of us. Some kilometers away, the first compulsory stop, we need to go through customs in order to enter Chile, vegetables, fruit, meat, dairy products, etc. must be left here. It is a good excuse to take some fresh water and build up some strength.
The journey goes on and our first objective is the place where we will have lunch, EL VALLE, a place surrounded by trees, next to the river that some of us may enjoy. We will feel almost obliged to lie beneath a shady tree or a rock close to the river. After stretching ourselves for a while, we will start to pedal enthusiastically since we only have 50 kms left. We will go through Chile’s customs, id, etc: and 108.3 kms we will find ourselves with another surprise… the beginning of the asphalt, where the bike will go from bouncing and dodging stones to rolling over an absolutely smooth and silent road, absolute pleasure by MTB.
Las Garzas and other small towns will be passed by -some people will look surprised because of our presence- to finally reach a beautiful place, El Lago Colbun, where we will go camping at its riverside to behold the sunset over its horizon.
Thursday (Lago Colbun – Talca)
During the last stretch, the union among the group and the team work will start to show. The asphalt let us try to go each one of us very close to each other and in line, only the first one in the row will absorb the wind while the rest will be able to rest for a few minutes. Then we will start taking it in turns. Slowly but surely, we will come to notice the increase in speed, which will make us feel these last 60 kms quite shorter. It is crucial to take into account that we must be careful and pay attention all the time since the increase in speed increases the risks as well and it is everybody’s concern to lower that factor as much as possible.
There are a couple of towns that we still have to visit, and the only thing left to do is to imagine, after 210 kms of intense cycling, a row of MTBs entering Talca, with big smiles, a nice group and dream come true…
“THE CHALLENGE OF THE CORDILLERA BY MTB”
We will finally arrive at one of the best hotels in the city; we are going to have dinner at a restaurant and we are going to ramble on to discover the city during the night.
Friday (Talca – Mendoza Capital)
After having breakfast we are going to Mendoza by mini-bus, crossing another Cordillerano path”Las Cuevas”. We are going to visit “El Aconcagua” (6959 mts s.n.m) Puente del Inca y Uspallata. We are going to have dinner in a restaurant; hotel and afterwards we will go to sleep.
Saturday (Mendoza – Buenos Aires)
We will have plenty of time to visit the place and go shopping. The hardest part of the day is the afternoon when we will find ourselves thinking about our way back home…but some movies and chats will make it a lot easier.
Sunday (Arrival at Buenos Aires)
We are going to arrive at Buenos Aires. It’s time for a farewell but not for so long, because in a couple of days we are going to meet again to watch the video of the trip.
